Launceston Woman Raises Thousands for Breast Cancer Research

Peru Trek InstagramIn just over two weeks Trevallyn resident Johanna Baker-Dowdell will be swapping the rocky terrain of Cataract Gorge for the Lares trek en route to Machu Picchu to raise money for breast cancer research.

 

Johanna, 40, and her friend Annalisa Holmes, 44, have been training and fundraising for most of this year for Trek Towards a Cure in Peru this November.

 

“It’s hard to believe that after almost eight months of training, planning and fundraising we’re so close to leaving now,” Johanna said.

“I’ve been walking on the fire trails of Cataract Gorge or the hilly streets of Trevallyn every day, plus challenging myself to beat my walking times on the flat with events like ParkRun and Run and Walk for Your Heart.

 

“This trek has been a great excuse for me to get fitter and also build awareness of breast cancer, a disease that affects so many of us,” she said.

 

The 12-day trek to Machu Picchu is a fundraiser for NCBF to help it reach its goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. The trek is run by Inspired Adventures, with participants from all over Australia leaving for Peru on November 2.

 

Thank you picAnnalisa and Johanna are aiming to raise $10,000 for NBCF and their total is currently sitting just under $7000.

 

The pair expects corporate sponsorships for trek t-shirts, raffles and a garage sale next week will help them hit their fundraising goal before they leave.

 

“I’m holding a garage sale in Trevallyn as part of the national Garage Sale Trail event the week before we head off to Peru. Launceston residents following the trail can pick up clothes, toys, books, DVDs, tools, kitchenware and lots of Pink Ribbon merchandise on Saturday, October 24,” Johanna said.
