Little Athletics Regional Championships at Mingara

February 23, 2009 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell Leave a Comment

Mingara’s Gatorade Regional Athletics Centre is the venue for the Little Athletics Regional Championships for Region One on 21-22 February.

The Central Coast Little Athletics Zone is hosting the championships and expects more than 1200 athletes from the Central Coast, Northern, North East and North West Metropolitan Zones to attend. This includes more than 300 athletes who recently qualified to represent the Central Coast at the Zone Championships in December.

Central Coast Zone and Region One Coordinator Ed Batten said the athletes, aged 7-16 years, would compete in 232 track and 90 field events over the weekend.

“Some of the events are altered slightly from the IAAF (International Amateur Athletics Federation) rules to cater for differing ages and growth stages of the athletes, but include 100m run, 60m hurdles, 1500m walk, long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus throw and javelin throw,” Mr Batten said.

“There is expected to be some great competition from all the athletes. There is a good possibility that many state records will be set at these championships, since it is the first time that the Under 17 age groups have been able to attend.

“I can see some outstanding efforts put in to see who can get their names down as the state record holder for those events this year. I believe the Central Coast will put on a great show and go on to the State Championships,” he added.

The first three athletes in the Under 9 age groups and above will qualify for the State Track and Field Championships at Homebush on 20-22 March.

Competition starts at 8.30am and runs into the evening, finishing around 7pm.

Mingara Sports and Community Coordinator Sarah Russell said Mingara’s athletics centre was an outstanding venue.

“Central Coast athletes already know the Gatorade Regional Athletics Centre well, but now it will be showcased for Region One athletes from across Sydney as well,” Ms Russell said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our region to shine in sport at such a great venue,” she said.
