Attractive Qualities

June 5, 2008 By Johanna Leave a Comment

This poem, by Audrey Hepburn, is beautiful and reminds us of the good things in life. For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. [Read more...]

Inspiring Quote

June 4, 2008 By Johanna Leave a Comment

I read a great quote while at the hairdresser this morning. I’m not sure who to attribute it to, but it really stuck with me:

“It’s not how many breaths you take in your life that matters, but how many moments take your breath away!”I feel truly inspired by this.

Marketing on the Cheap

May 21, 2008 By Johanna 1 Comment

This article by Johanna Baker-Dowdell was published in the April/May 2008 edition of Business Mums Magazine.

It’s every new business owner’s Catch-22: getting word out that you have set up shop, but not having any money to do it. You need customers to create the money to market the business, but to get customers you need to tell them you exist! Before you do any sort of marketing, you need to work out your strategy by answering the following questions: [Read more...]

Relationships… After Baby

April 23, 2008 By Johanna Leave a Comment

I wrote this article for www.motherinc.com.au. Have a look at it here: http://www.motherinc.com.au/editorial/ShowStory.asp?StoryID=541

All parents would remember insisting a baby would not change their relationship. With the benefit of hindsight – and after many broken nights’ sleep – reality sets in: once you’ve had a baby, your relationship with your partner changes forever. [Read more...]

Sustaining Success

March 3, 2008 By Johanna Leave a Comment

This article by Johanna Baker-Dowdell has been published on Mum Zone. Have a look at: http://www.mumzone.com.au/business_careers_sustaining_success.php

As a business person you might think there would be no business if you weren’t around, but this is not always the case. It pays to put some time into thinking about the type of business you want and plan for the end at the beginning. Start by thinking about why you established the business and what your goals are, preferably before the business is launched. You might be on maternity leave and want to see if you can combine working from home with looking after your child. Or, you might have been made redundant and have found there is a gap in the market where your skills lie. Either way, it is important to have a clear goal when you start your business and this will ensure you are always working towards your desired end result. Put simply, you wouldn’t buy a two-seater convertible car for a family of five, so why invest your valuable time and money into a business without making sure it is sustainable? Planning a sustainable business is not just about having a great logo or an animated website, but about the business’s structure and direction. Here are a few tips to consider: [Read more...]

Free Publications: Light in Size, But Not in Punch

February 29, 2008 By Johanna Leave a Comment

Feature Article: Published in PANPA Bulletin

With daily newspapers the world over suffering circulation decreases, publishers have become savvier in a bid to attract the elusive market of young adult professionals. A host of free (or ‘lite’) stand-alone dailies or brand-extending versions of the existing product have been launched to reach the 30-something professionals of the planet. The gamble has paid off handsomely for many, providing an additional revenue source through new advertisers for their businesses. [Read more...]

Living with PCOS

February 29, 2008 By Johanna 17 Comments

Feature Article: Published in Natural Parenting

“I suggest if you want to have children you do something about it before you turn 30, and you will probably need fertility treatment.”

I was 23 years old when my gynaecologist said this to me and eight years later the words still send a shiver down my spine. There was no way I wanted to even contemplate that option for at least five years, but that warning haunted me from that day onwards. [Read more...]

Strawberry Communications Blog

February 27, 2008 By Johanna Leave a Comment

While this blog is not my first foray into the blogging world (see my personal blog at www.pcosmum.com), it is my first time at business blogging, which is a whole other kettle of fish!

Here I hope to help businesses (particularly small businesses whom I have a great affinity with, being a solo entrepreneur myself) find hints and tips to marketing themselves through the power of words and public relations. With the right combination of powerful writing and great PR techniques a business can have customers clammering at their door and may not need much more in the way of marketing, except for brand building.
