Human beings are social creatures. We love connecting with others and one of the simplest ways to facilitate this connection is through storytelling. Business owners can use that instinctive attraction to stories in marketing, by inviting customers to connect through a form of communication we’re all comfortable with.
I’ve written about the power of storytelling through data, creative writing and advertising already, but in this post I want to share some of my favourite storytelling tools with you.
Social media
Social media has enabled businesses to tell stories in more fun, simple and effective ways than ever before, building on those innate connections I mentioned above. Whether you want to live blog an event you’re hosting via Twitter, share your fundraising efforts for a local charity through boosted posts on Facebook or showcase your online store’s unique style through Instagram or Pinterest, social media is the place to do it. Almost everyone has – and uses – their phones to stay connected all day, every day. We all access various social media platforms multiple times throughout the day, meaning you can be connecting with customers via storytelling on their favourite platform at any time.
Canva
One tool that enhances storytelling on social media is Canva, a design website (and now app) that allows you to put images and words together in easy-to-use templates. There are templates for the main social media platforms, presentations, posters, infographics, invitations and so much more. I use Canva for my own marketing, but also for items I create for clients.
Biteable
Video is a tool that was under-utilised in marketing for a long time due to the time and expense needed for production. With the advent of video-enabled mobile phones and sites like YouTube and Vimeo, it’s easier than ever to create and upload a video online. But, what if you want to animate the video? Animators are still cost prohibitive for some, but I’ve discovered a site that takes the sting out of animation. Biteable helps you make your own videos with templates, graphics and images – and you can do it quickly.
These are just a three of the many ways your can tell business stories. Which tools are your favourites for storytelling?
