I recently wrote a post about using technology, in particular social media, to market your business. Read it here.
I have since become more involved with social media for business and personal purposes. I have found it led to work, as well as new contacts and greater knowledge.
I’ve had a Facebook page for quite a while and have come to see this as more of a personal medium, even though I have many business contacts and groups there.
On the other hand, Twitter has opened my eyes to what is possible in social media. In a matter of weeks I have made and, spoken to, contacts from around the world, as well as in my own Central Coast back yard.
I have been using Twitter to share updates on how my pregnancy is going (five days overdue at the time of writing), what I am working on at the time and for which client, and I have been joining in conversations about a range of topics.
This has been a fun experiment and one I would recommend, especially for small businesses. There are some great stories about how businesses using Twitter have become instant success stories and I find it very inspiring.
Check out this one about a US coffee shop that doubled its clientele using Twitter. I have even set up my Facebook account so my Twitter tweets (updates) are replicated on my Facebook status and I have both Facebook and Twitter applications set up on my BlackBerry so I don’t miss out on any news even if I’m out.
I feel even more connected now than ever and the world of being a solopreneur is getting smaller and smaller as I make more contacts daily.
Give it time, my wager is that you’ll eventually disconnect your Twitter account from the Facebook one. If you like seeing comments and having votes on “tweets”, FriendFeed is probably a better option. Given enough volume, your Facebook stream will grow cumbersome and you lose more value than you do in Twitter because of the level of personal information people tend to willingly launch via Facebook. Just a thought. I’m glad you’re having such a great experience in social media! =)
