Almost one million Australians operate a business from home. Many of these businesses are run by mothers who are trying to create the lifestyle they want with their family while contributing to the family income at the same time.
While there are many books and guides to help people wanting to start a business from home, there’s not much available specifically to help entrepreneurial mothers. Mothers in business face all the usual start-ups issues such as market research, business registration, taxation and marketing, but they also have to make all this work around their family, so have limited time, suffer from mother guilt and may even need to factor in the housework as well!
So why do it? The answer is simple – many women don’t want to be “just a mum” or finish their career as an employee. They want to experience success they have created themselves. These women are mistresses of their own destinies and they have an armoury of skills which can be utilised while they are bringing up the baby.
The book Business & Baby on Board will look at all the steps involved in planning, starting and building a successful business through the eyes of business mums. Each chapter will discuss an important aspect of business, including an interview of an expert business mother on that topic. But it will also include her own case study explaining how she started her business, issues she faced, her triumphs and advice she may have for readers.
I will weave each successful business mother’s story through the facts to provide an informative how-to guide for business start-ups, but with inspiration and extra tips to help mums who want to have the family, the business and the lifestyle – and be successful at all three.
Using my own experience starting a service-based business from home with a baby as a base, this book will be written as the business mum’s bible.
I am currently sourcing business mum profiles to feature on the Business & Baby on Board blog and from these I will choose who to interview for the book. A publisher is currently looking at my proposal, but if they pass I am going to publish it myself! So if you’d like to get involved check out my plan at PlanBig or comment below and I can send you some information.
Johanna-I think you have a great concept here. Gone are the days when you had to choose between a home life and work.I believe it is perfectly possible to integrate work and life through online working or identifying business opportunities around our lifestyles so the age old balance debate goes away or at least becomes less of an issue.
We all have something to offer but need reliable proven strategies that work and that can short-cut people’s learning curve. I look forward to reading your book!
Thanks for your support Kath. It means a lot! I’m enjoying meeting lots of amazing women through this project and they all have a different take on working business around family.
