This month the girls are taking over October and turning it into “Frocktober” in a bid to raise awareness of and money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) and unique online tampon subscription service www.impromptu.com.au is behind them every step of the way.
www.impromptu.com.au founder and owner Paula Rodgers designed the feminine health and hygiene service in a bid to make modern day women’s life just a little bit easier, but has been amazed at the lack of awareness of important female health issues such as ovarian cancer. So this month impromptu has sponsored the Frocktober festivities and Paula, usually content to wear her comfortable jeans, has committed to donning a frock every day during Frocktober.
“I will be wearing a dress a day every day until November, when I can return to the comfort of my trusty jeans,” states Paula.
“I am passionate about women’s issues and this one is very important. According to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF), one woman dies every 10 hours from ovarian cancer in Australia. There is currently no screening test in Australia for ovarian cancer, so Frocktober is supporting research into a suitable early detection test,” she said.
Frocktober issues a challenge to girls, women and interested men to don a frock for a day, week, fortnight or a full month during October and get sponsored for it! All money raised will be donated to the OCRF.
“On top of the charity element, the premise behind this initiative is also about sustainability and using what you’ve got. I simply have to use what’s in my wardrobe or what I’ve managed to borrow from friends so some of my outfits will have to be imaginative!” Paula explained.
Keep up with Paula’s outfits by logging on to http://blog.impromptu.com.au or the impromptu Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Impromptu/6542826940 for daily ‘frock fotos’ and get updates through Twitter (@paularodgers).
The month-long dress-up festivities will culminate in frock-a-palooza: a joy-filled party on Saturday, October 31, to celebrate everyone’s sponsorship efforts and participation in Frocktober 2009.
Frocktober is all about:
• Increasing the public’s awareness of ovarian cancer
• Promoting women’s health and wellbeing
• Celebrating the great diversity of shapes, sizes and colours women come in.
