Not just for gaming and design purposes, augmented reality is now being utilised for training and upskilling by the BBAMZ Immersive Skills Lab. The first of its kind in Tasmania, the lab officially launched at TasTAFE’s Alanvale campus today (24 October).
The Immersive Skills Lab is a partnership between Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone (BBAMZ) and TasTAFE, with $250,000 funding provided by Skills Tasmania and additional financial support from Abel Energy, Timberlink, Bell Bay Aluminium, APA Group and Liberty Bell Bay.
BBAMZ CEO Susie Bower said the Immersive Skills Lab was a state-of-the-art training space designed to inspire and equip Tasmania’s next generation of learners.
Learners training in this pioneering lab can develop new skills or upskill in a risk-free virtual environment before even entering an active work site, Ms Bower said.
“There has been a lot of excitement about the different industries Tasmanians can train in using the Immersive Skills Lab and the virtual learning environment means jobseekers can develop confidence in their chosen field in a safe space. I can already see how important this innovative lab is going to be for Tasmanians looking to start their career, retrain or extend their skills.
While the training provided through the Immersive Skills Program is currently non-accredited, we are focused on embedding learning outcomes that are practical and impactful.
“To further support our migrant community, BBAMZ has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Welcome Cultural Services. This partnership was made possible by Jobs Tasmania and BBAMZ, in collaboration with Catholic Care’s Employment Facilitator, is delivering a comprehensive introduction to workplace safety and other essential training to help migrants gain employment or thrive in their existing positions,” Ms Bower said.
