Crowdsourcing Part 2 – the Book Cover

February 20, 2013 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell 5 Comments

Striped Background (left) & Pink Spot (right)

My book about starting and running a business around children, Business & Baby on Board, is almost a finished product.

Since I crowdsourced funding to publish the book it made perfect sense to me to also crowdsource the cover designs. You can see from the two covers above the woman and her baby with the cityscape is central to both, with the titles and background providing the difference. The talented team at AJD Creative designed both covers.

I uploaded both designs to my social media networks and asked my friends and family what they thought. Here’s how the 97 votes played out:

  Striped background Pink spot
Google+ 3 4
Twitter (personal and book) 3 1
Facebook (AusMumpreneur Network) 7 14
Facebook (book page) 12 9
Facebook (business page) 2 7
Facebook (personal profile) 13 15
Family and friends 2 5
Total 42 55

As you can see the winner was the softer pink cover with the spot highlighting the title. This will be the cover for the print edition of Business & Baby on Board.

In the process of crowdsourcing these cover designs it was suggested to me to use both covers, since they were both popular. Upon speaking with Editia, who is publishing the ebook edition, it was decided the striped background would probably work better as a thumbnail.

So the upshot is Business & Baby on Board could have two covers. What are you thoughts on this?

    Hi Johanna,

Love both covers and had difficulty choosing, but eventually I did the old ‘head vs heart’ routine and decided that although the first cover appeals to my sense of the dramatic, I really think the second cover fits the subject of the book better!

Penny my thoughts exactly. This was why I had trouble choosing and had to leave the decision in other’s hands. Thanks for your vote.

What a great idea. I like the second one best, too. I just had my first cover designed and only had the once choice. I’ll know better next time.

Thanks for your vote Dorothy. When does your book come out?
