Launceston’s sweet bakers Stanley & Nelson will be seeing red (red velvet that is) on Saturday, but all for a good cause – the Red Cross Big Cake Bake.
Stanley & Nelson owners Susan Henshaw and Johanna Baker-Dowdell have devised a mouth-watering menu of red velvet themed treats to help raise money for the charity at this week’s Harvest Launceston market.
The duo will be selling red velvet cupcakes, red velvet brownies and red velvet whoopie pies. These treats are $4.50, with 50c from each one sold donated to the Big Cake Bake.
Whoopie pies are a popular treat in the USA, with some even saying they have taken over cupcakes in popularity, so Susan and Johanna thought this weekend’s fundraiser would be the perfect opportunity to try the intriguing sandwiched cake out.
“The recipe was tested on Sunday and received the thumbs up from our tasting team. We expect they will sell out first at the market,” Johanna said.

Donations raised from Big Cake Bake will support the work of the Red Cross’s programs in Australia and overseas. The official Big Cake Bake is on Monday, August 27, but events will held throughout August around Australia.
“We are hoping to raise $200 through our cake sales and donations made on the day. This amount will help meet the clothing, food and accommodation needs for a night for a family who has lost their home in a bushfire,” Susan explained.
“Our stall at Harvest Launceston will be a sea of red and white – Red Cross’s colours – on Saturday. We will also have a selection of delicious vanilla and chocolate cupcakes decorated in bright spring-inspired colours,” she added.
Stanley & Nelson’s Big Cake Bake red velvet fundraiser will be held at Harvest Launceston in the Cimitiere St carpark between 9am and 1pm this Saturday (August 25).
