Like so many others I like to start each new year by thinking about what I’d like to achieve in the next 12 months. I always have a list of goals, which span personal and professional aspirations. For the past few years I’ve set myself a word as the theme for year, with each goal radiating from that one idea. My word for this year is “knowledge”.
A friend pointed out I already had knowledge when it came to my business and my area of study, but this year I want to go beyond the strict definition of knowledge of gaining facts, information or skill through education and experience to deepen my knowledge in three areas:
Professional – I am about to start my third year of my PhD and intend to finish the year confident I am an expert in the space where traditional journalism and social media meet.
Creative – I’ve been playing around with writing fiction for a few years now so this year I will concentrate on personal development by taking up opportunities to learn more about my craft.
Personal – I consider myself to be fairly self aware, but that awareness doesn’t often go beyond what’s in my head. I am not only my thoughts, so I intend to explore my whole self this year, with particular reference to bringing the mind and body into alignment.
If I follow this path I will finish 2016 with more facts, information and skill in each of these three areas, but I also want that knowledge to open the door to understanding too.
Or in Helen Keller’s beautiful words, “Knowledge is love and light and vision”. I’ll keep you posted throughout the year on what I’m up by sharing degree milestones, publishing my fictional pieces and checking in on my personal goals.
But enough about me. What are your goals for 2016? And how did you arrive at them?
