Business & Baby on Board named in ‘SMART 100’ Index

May 20, 2015 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell Leave a Comment

JBD with Biz Baby book LRBusiness & Baby on Board has been named one of Australia’s most innovative products or services, in one of the largest and most audacious innovation awards of its kind in Australia – the Anthill Magazine ‘SMART 100’ Index.

About Business & Baby on Board

Business & Baby on Board is the mum’s bible for starting out and succeeding in business. These women are mistresses of their own destinies with an armoury of skills that can be utilised while they are bringing up the baby.

The innovation initially came to life when author Johanna Baker-Dowdell’s blog posts about running her business, Strawberry Communications, around children attracted followers and comments, with readers asking for more content like this.

“I was encouraged to write the book Business & Baby on Board because while there were many books and guides to help people wanting to start a business from home, there wasn’t much available specifically to help entrepreneurial mothers,” Johanna explained.

Ausmumpreneur

Christmas Gift List for Mumpreneurs

December 15, 2014 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell 4 Comments

GiftsIt’s 10 days until Christmas and you’ve been busy ticking off items from your Christmas list to make sure everything is perfect for your family’s festivities next week.

That’s great, but have you considered yourself in this equation? If you haven’t, it’s time to sit down with a tea, coffee or cold drink (or something alcoholic if that’s what’s needed) and pick something from this list for you. Yes, you!

Busy mumpreneurs should be rewarding themselves for everything they have achieved in 2014 and this list makes it easy to do just that.

1. Practice self care – the five minutes you’re taking to have a drink and read this are not quite enough. As Helen Butler from Clutter Rescue explains in her interview with Howard’s Storage World, self care could include booking in some time for a catch up with a friend, a facial at your favourite beauty clinic or reading something in the sun sans children. Watch Helen’s interview for more ideas (and some organisation tips too).

My self care picks are: Mary’s Skin Care, The Little Black Dress Project, Business & Baby on Board and Juice Plus.

Guest post: Organisation Inspiration For Working Mums

February 24, 2014 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell Leave a Comment

Woman in home office with computer smilingBetter organisation? Improved efficiency? Increased productivity? With your work load and family schedule, you’re probably thinking, “I need an assistant and a nanny.” Since most of us aren’t afforded these luxuries, here are three actual solutions for getting more done.

Paper & Pen

No matter how digitised our lives become, no smartphone app or Google calendar can replace pen and paper. If you’re an agenda book type of girl, you can update your day planning with the bullet journal. The bullet journal is designed for “the list-makers, the note-takers, the Post-It note pilots, the track-keepers, and the dabbling doodlers,” according to its website. It’s an “analog system” and “rapid logging” method for people who prefer to use a blank page while managing their data-overloaded lives.

Even as a working mum whose daily family responsibilities and business goals seem to always overlap, bullet journaling provides insights and identifies what’s important from what’s not. Your bullet journal’s tracking system will live in a Moleskin Squared Notebook that has grid pages perfect for indexing, migrating and collecting, as well as creating monthly and daily calendars. Check out BulletJournal.com for a step-by-step guide on how to replace being busy with being productive.

Business & Baby on Board – the book!

January 27, 2011 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell 4 Comments

Essential tool for business mums

Almost one million Australians operate a business from home. Many of these businesses are run by mothers who are trying to create the lifestyle they want with their family while contributing to the family income at the same time.

While there are many books and guides to help people wanting to start a business from home, there’s not much available specifically to help entrepreneurial mothers. Mothers in business face all the usual start-ups issues such as market research, business registration, taxation and marketing, but they also have to make all this work around their family, so have limited time, suffer from mother guilt and may even need to factor in the housework as well!

So why do it? The answer is simple – many women don’t want to be “just a mum” or finish their career as an employee. They want to experience success they have created themselves. These women are mistresses of their own destinies and they have an armoury of skills which can be utilised while they are bringing up the baby.
