The question of where inspiration comes from has been asked of me, and by me many times since I decided I wanted to be a journalist at seven.

Writers I admire were recently asked the same question at the Festival of Golden Words in Beaconsfield and their answers confirmed what I’ve always thought – inspiration is everywhere!

Bay of Fires author Poppy Gee commented that inspiration to her was like drawing on “scraps from many cupboards”, which I understand. Watching people, hearing snippets of conversation or even smelling a certain scent can evoke a series of ideas for me. I even created an entire personality around a man I followed to the bus stop one morning simply based on the click his shoes made as he walked.

My Vision for 2014

January 31, 2014 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell 5 Comments

Vision boardAs a visual person, nothing has been more powerful in helping me achieve than to have my goals in front of my eyes.

Last month I outlined my intentions for the year ahead and told you I would be spending a day with three special friends brainstorming and creating our vision boards for the year ahead. In preparation for this day we all completed Leonie Dawson’s Create Your Amazing Year workbooks. This made sure we had our goals, dreams and intentions right at the front of our minds.

As you can see from my board, there’s plenty of powerful images and a smattering of inspiring words. The board is divided into nine segments, based loosely on feng shui principles. From the top left and moving clockwise, the segments are spirituality, career, travel, creativity, relationships, aspirations, wealth and health, with my heart right in the middle.

Strawberry Patch Makeover

January 31, 2014 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell 3 Comments

New officeAfter spending so much time in the past few months thinking about how I would make every second of 2014 count, I realised the one big thing I’d been procrastinating over was painting my office. It was time the Strawberry Patch had a makeover.

Old officeInitially I thought of repainting the insipid yellow walls a warm white to make it feel more comfortable in winter (being the coldest room in the house is only good in summer!), but after consulting with my good friend and colour consultant extraordinaire Suse Henshaw, I realised a strong colour was the way to go. The Patch now has three walls of a beautiful, deep, luxurious peacock blue and one white (we thought that a better options for Skype and videos on dark days).

All you want for Christmas is… something that makes you get out of bed in the morning.

December 11, 2013 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell Leave a Comment

Joh with booksYour inbox has been crammed with emails about ordering presents in time for Christmas over the past few weeks. And your letterbox has probably been filled up multiple times with brochures too. It’s Christmas and everyone is trying to get their product or service in front of you to ensure the gift you buy is from them.

If you’re extra organised (unlike me) you’ve already done all your Christmas shopping and you’ll be sitting pretty about now. But, I’m not writing about the presents you’ve researched and bought for your family and friends. I’m writing about what you got for yourself.

“Nothing,” I hear you say (I know because I’m the same). Well, I have a solution. My solution is something is so inspiring it’ll make you want to change course. If you’re a fabulous woman with an entrepreneurial side, let me introduce you to my book, Business & Baby on Board.
