This post is not about the skills you should have to run a business; it’s about what you need to do if you want media attention.

Unless your business revolves around something we absolutely must have, like water or you’re an expert in a medical specialism, you will need some level of publicity to survive. Often that publicity comes in the form of media interest – both from traditional outlets like a newspaper, or newer platforms, like social media.

If you want to get media attention then you need to be media savvy. Here are some tools and tricks to help you along the way:

  1. Be photogenic

Whether a journalist has called asking for your opinion on a big story or you’ve been invited to speak at an event, you will need a good quality, high-resolution photo available. Get it done now, and then when they ask for it you’ll have one ready to send immediately. For more on photos for business PR, read my post A Pictures Tells a Thousand Words.

PR hacks for business

Marketing your business can be hard work. When you’re not working in your business, you should be working on it, which means doing all things needed to make it tick along nicely and earn you a sustainable profit.

So in the interests of helping out fellow business owners who put their PR activity to the bottom of a very long to do list, I thought I might share some of my favourite PR hacks with you. These are a combination of tools websites and services I use to market client businesses, as well as my own, and I hope you pick up something that makes your life easier.

1. Social media – I’ve written extensively about using social media to promote your business here, here and here, to pick a few posts, because social media should always be part of your PR strategy. You don’t need to be across all platforms, in fact I actively dissuade clients from that approach, but picking two where your customers are and where you feel happy to share updates on a regular basis is enough.

SourceBottle 101

October 1, 2011 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell 6 Comments

Business owners who have limited marketing budgets, but are social media savvy, have been creating fantastic promotional opportunities for themselves using SourceBottle.

I have secured TV appearances, national newspaper articles, radio interviews and local media attention for my clients via SourceBottle call outs – and you can do the same.

Starting in Australia and now operating nationally, SourceBottle is an introduction service for journalists, bloggers, PR companies and businesses. By this, I mean journalists and bloggers post call outs for sources on a particular topic and business owners (or their PR agents) respond, offering their stories.

Finding the Right Media for Your Business

April 15, 2011 By Johanna Baker-Dowdell Leave a Comment

The term media goes beyond the traditional broadcast mediums of print, radio and television, to include more interactive mediums like phones, computers, CDs and DVDs, blogs, vlogs, websites, online magazines and self published books.

When I first started working in the media 15 years ago, the Internet was not a research tool and I wrote articles on a small computer monitor with green text on a black screen. Things have changed so much in that time – some publications, such as Brisbane Times, are now published online only.

Melbourne business woman and winner of the prestigious 2010 AusMumpreneur of the Year accolade Antonette Golikidis is one of a list of high-profile speakers who will inspire business women in Melbourne next month.

The Little Innoscents owner will speak about how she set up this international business from her kitchen bench around her young son and what the award means for her business in the future.

After the success of the annual conference held in Brisbane in July, Connect2Mums owners Peace Mitchell and Katy Garner designed the Melbourne Mumpreneurs One-Day Conference to be packed with successful business women who combine doing business with being a mum.

“We have put together a fantastic line up of speakers for our Melbourne event and can’t wait to meet in person all the talented women we know online,” Peace said.

“It is so exciting for Connect2Mums to expand from our online community and we love seeing members motivate each other with their amazing stories about business and life.

“Connect2Mums is such a friendly and enthusiastic network, we can’t help wanting to take it from the online space and meet members in real life. This is going to be a fantastic day full of great information, fun, chocolate and networking,” she added.

The event at Rydges Melbourne on October 20 will showcase a number of topics affecting not just women in business, but also working mothers. Some of these topics include social media, systems, branding, PR and the media and product launches.

Other speakers include Alycia Edgar of bookzkeeper, Sam Mutimer of Thinktank Media, Rebecca Derrington of SourceBottle and Dannielle Michaels and Monique Filer of b.box.

The speakers will not only share their own experiences as case studies for attendees, but also offer advice and tips on having it all in business and life.

Tickets for the Melbourne Mumpreneurs One-Day Conference are $160 and can be purchased at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/795922626/efbnen

Connect2Mums provides a safe and supportive environment for women with online businesses to get together and share information, network and gain support.
